Pyrimidine-Based Push–Pull Systems with a New Anchoring Amide Group for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

New donor–π–acceptor pyrimidine-based dyes comprising an amide moiety as anchoring group have been designed. The were synthesized by sequential procedures based on the microwave-assisted Suzuki cross-coupling and bromination reactions. influence of dye structure length π-linker photophysical electrochemical properties photovoltaic effectiveness dye-sensitized solar cells was investigated. An increase in efficiency with a decrease revealed. D1 only one 2,5-thienylene-linker provided highest power conversion among fabricated sensitized cells.

An unusual colour change was observed when the voltage applied to the device was reversed which was accompanied by a five-fold increase in the cell efficiency.
